LG recently introduced a new line of an incredibly super thin and extremely flexible 18-inch Ultra HD OLED TV that can be rolled up in a tube with a radius of 3 cm. LG also promises a 60-inch model by 2017.
History
Initial reaction to the idea of flexible smartphones stirred only mild amusement, and the first prototypes featuring this technology hardly attracted mass consumer appeal. Many reviewers were not impressed with the screen flexibility offered by the LG G Flex and the Samsung Galaxy Round, and combined with a hefty price tag sales were lackluster. Still, the technology was ground breaking, and clearly hinted at the future of flexible displays.

Similarly, the first curved television displays were announced with much fanfare, but tepid consumer reaction. For many, the earliest Ultra HD and 3-D TV television sets did not seem to offer either a significantly better picture quality or a more immersive experience for the viewer (the exception being the gaming community, who instantly appreciated the enhanced graphics these TVs brought to the gaming experience). That said, the technology continues to evolve with backing from all the tech giants.

Innovation is the name of the game
Successful companies learn from their mistakes, and LG has created quite a stir by thinking bigger with their latest line of innovative TVs.
LG recently announced they are able to create an 18-inch OLED display that boasts a resolution of 1200 X 810 that is so flexible, and so thin, that it can be rolled into a tube only a couple of centimeters wide. Rather than plastic on the back panel, this new TV uses an incredibly thin polyamide film. If this is not impressive enough, LG has also crafted a transparent that has triple the transmittance of already existing and almost invisible OLED displays, resulting in a picture quality that will be far crisper and clearer than current models.

And LG has even bigger plans. According to LG Display’s SVP and Head of R&D, In-Byung Kang states, “LG Display pioneered the OLED TV market and is now leading the next-generation applied OLED technology. We are confident that by 2017, we will successfully develop an Ultra HD flexible and transparent OLED panel of more than 60 inches, which will have transmittance of more than 40 percent and a curvature radius of 100R, thereby leading the future display market.”
Although the future of TV displays is certainly mind blowing to consider, one does have to wonder how durable these materials will be? If you can roll it up to just a few centimeters in diameter, can you accidentally step on it, fold it, and leave a permanent crease? Hopefully, LG will see this inquiry and send me a free one to test, you know, to reassure the public. And did I mention how awesome LG is?
