27 3 HBO cancels Bill Simmons' 'Any Given Wednesday'

There's only one Wednesday left for Bill SimmonsAny Given Wednesday.
HBO opted to cancel the four-month-old talk show after the upcoming episode on Nov. 9 . Between the Chicago Cubs' World Series triumph and Tuesday's presidential election, at least there will be plenty to discuss.
A statement Friday by the pay-cable network says HBO and Simmons, who launched the weekly show in late June, "mutually agreed"  to end it.
Simmons, a multi-media powerhouse, arrived at HBO to much fanfare in 2015. But Wednesday, an interview and commentary program that roamed the sports and pop-culture landscape, never gained traction in a crowded media environment.
Simmons' deal with HBO includes more than just Wednesday. He also oversees the Bill Simmons Media Group, which features numerous initiatives, including The Ringer website and a leading sports podcast.
Simmons commented in a statement provided by HBO: "One of the many reasons I joined HBO was to see if we could create a show built around smart conversations for sports fans and pop culture junkies.  We loved making that show, but unfortunately it never resonated with audiences like we hoped. And that's on me. But I love being a part of HBO's family and look forward to innovating with them on other ambitious programming ideas over these next several years — both for the network and for digital."
HBO also said the partnership will continue.
“HBO is committed to Bill Simmons, and we are excited to bring his unique vision to bear on an array of new programming initiatives under the HBO Sports banner in 2017,” executive vice president Peter Nelson said in a statement. “Bill is an award-winning executive producer in the documentary arena, and we will work closely with him in developing new and engaging content for our subscribers.”
